A classy rarity from the Valais
Merlot originated in Bordeaux and probably owes its name to the blackbirds (French: merle), who loved to eat its precocious fruit. In the 18th century, Merlot began its worldwide success story. Today it is the second most cultivated grape variety in the world after Cabernet Sauvignon.
In Valais, however, Merlot remains a sought-after rarity. I like its stylish suppleness and the elegance it conveys. This Merlot feels at home in a sumptuous kitchen, especially when meat or sausages are involved. Nonetheless, vegan gourmets are among its most ardent lovers.
